FREEZE TAG / GUIDE & PLAY

Freeze Tag Meaning

Freeze tag is a chasing game in which tagged players stop moving, or “freeze,” until an untagged teammate releases them using an agreed rescue action. Unlike regular tag, getting tagged usually does not make you the new tagger.

What does “freeze tag” mean?

“Tag” means touching another player to catch them. “Freeze” means standing still after being caught; it does not mean using real ice. A free runner can rescue a frozen player so they can rejoin the chase. The rescue action varies between groups.

For example, if Alex is the tagger and catches Sam, Sam stands still. Jordan, who has not been caught, can rescue Sam using the action agreed at the start. Sam then runs again while Alex remains the tagger.

Playground freeze tag vs. Ultimate Freeze Tag

The playground activity is a group game with freezing and teammate rescues. Ultimate Freeze Tag is Lisierre’s single-player video game: you control a wizard and freeze contestants with magic before time runs out. The two share a theme, but do not have identical rules.

Use WASD or arrow keys to move and Z or Space to cast. The original also supports a gamepad. This site embeds the original itch game without changing its controls or assets.

Freeze tag questions

Is freeze tag different from regular tag?

Yes. In a common regular-tag game, the caught player becomes “it.” In freeze tag, caught players stay still and wait to be rescued while the tagger continues chasing.

How do you unfreeze someone?

Use the rescue action agreed before the round. Some groups use a light touch; Playworks describes a double high-five version. There is no single rescue rule shared by all variations.

Can I play the online game with my phone’s touchscreen?

The embedded original has no on-screen touch controls. A keyboard or compatible gamepad is needed. Loading the game on a phone does not mean touchscreen movement is supported.

Why does the online game take time to load?

The itch player must download game files and initialize the game engine. Wait for its progress bar. If it fails, try a browser with WebGL2 support or open the author’s itch page. Reloading repeatedly starts another loading attempt.
